Police not babysitters for teens Nelson police were once again forced to supervise hundreds of teenagers roaming the streets of Richmond on Friday night, and have sent a firm message to parents saying “we’re not a babysitting service”. Area Commander Steve Greally believes the teenagers “hoodwinked” their parents into believing they were attending the Summer Harvest Fare, when they were actually away from the event, further up Queen St. Police were kept busy confiscating alcohol from underage youngsters, picking up a lot of kids who had breached the conditions of their ball, and issuing a number of infringement notices for breaches of the liquor ban. While Steve says there was no serious harm done, the opportunities for something to go wrong with hundreds of underage teens roaming the streets unsupervised on a Friday night are “endless”. “The message I would like to

Steve says, from a police perspective, the Summer Harvest Fare was a well run event, and they complied with their responsibilities under the Sale and Supply of Liquor Act. “All the feedback we have received was that most of those attending the event had a good night, although a small number of adults did come to our attention.” Summer Harvest Fare organiser Kim Quint says the hordes of teens weren’t near the event itself. “There’s not anything we can do about that [the teenagers roaming the streets] but they didn’t cause any problems for us, within the event itself.”

Firemen burn down house A Hope house was purposely burnt to the ground by about 50 volunteer fire fighters on Tuesday night – all for a training exercise described as “valuable” by Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Ralph Lonsdale. Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade was approached by the owners of the house, which had severe
structural damage, to use it for training purposes, and Ralph says it’s a much cheaper alternative to knocking it down, because of the reduced amount of scrap left over. Fire fighters from Richmond, Wakefield, Upper Moutere and Mapua, Rural Fire Forces from Brightwater, Appleby and Hira, and the Rural Fire Network were
all in attendance for the training exercise. All in all, Ralph says it was a valuable experience and something he hoped would occur again. “It’s slightly different, but being inside and seeing how the fire develops is a good learning curve for everyone and they can experience the heat in relative safety.”

A noisy New Zealand Post aeroplane is expected to land in Nelson at 6am every week day for at least three weeks, which could wake people from their sleep, admits Nelson Airport Ltd. NZ Post will bring its mail from the North Island to Nelson for three to four weeks in April, as an upgrade of navigation equipment is carried out at Blenheim Airport where it usually goes. The work in Blenheim means the plane – a Fokker 27 Friendship – will arrive in Nelson each day at 6am and its noise will have a “noticeable” impact. But the 6am landing is much better than 3am, which is when NZ
Fokker 27 Friendship that will be coming to Nelson airport. Post usually flys in and the time they had proposed to land in Nelson. Nelson Airport Ltd chief executive Kaye McNabb says the delay to 6am will have a big impact on NZ Post, but they weren’t willing to have such an impact on locals during the middle of the night. The first early morning landing is expected to be on April 7.

Builders keen to get hands on more land Builders and developers are welcoming a decision by the Tasman District Council to review the district’s land development requirements, including the way it processes resource and building consents. The Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce last year presented a paper outlining its priorities for helping the region’s businesses. TDC chief executive Lindsay McKenzie says they have also been aware of the need to address these issues and will be forming a land development forum with the chamber that will have its first meeting in May. Lindsay says the group will look at a num-

ber of issues including planning and regulatory proposals, developers needs, consent performance, charges and fees. Lindsay says council is committed to making changes and will be engaging the industry to find the best solutions. Nelson Registered Master Builders Association vice president and director of Fowler Homes, Andrew Stevenson says the council’s initiative is good news for the industry. Andrew says the home building industry has been frus-
trated by a lack of sections coming on stream and anything council can do to speed up the development process will be welcomed. He also says the forum will need to focus on streamlining the building consent process because it will help builders programme their work and eliminate costly delays. “We are running out of sections for development and sections are our livelihood.” GJ Gardner Homes Nelson franchise director Glen Jarvie says the forum is “definitely a step in the right direction” although he is concerned that it won’t address the key issue of land affordability.

Schools pass quake test Closing the main block at Nelson College would have been a “nightmare”, but it’s a thought headmaster Gary O’Shea shouldn’t have to worry about with the school passing all of the seismic strengthening tests that have occurred so far. Both Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls were among the 224 schools in the country that the Ministry of Education had assessed to see if they were at risk in the event of an earthquake. Even though high-profile buildings in Nelson, such as the Trafalgar Centre and Nelson School of Music, were closed for being well below the new building standard, Nelson College – the oldest state school in the country – has proven to be above it. The main block is one of three that will still be assessed in the coming weeks, but Gary says they are the lowest priority, which is why they were left last. “We own our own boarding houses and two of them were built in the late ‘30s. We had a complete seismic report done before the Christchurch earthquake, and both Rutherford and Barnicoat came back at 100 per cent. The Ministry of Education does their thing with the buildings they own, but we weren’t concerned because the two oldest were 100 per cent.” The main block was rebuilt after the Murchison Earthquake severely damaged the previous building in 1929, and Gary highlighted its structural strength by describing it as a “bird’s nest of steel with concrete”.

Air NZ ‘left me humiliated’ A Nelson man says Air New Zealand has let itself down with rude staff, ridiculous rules and over-the-top cancellation fees. Steve Page took his nine year old son on a trip to Auckland earlier this month and because he was on crutches, packed one bag for the two of them so it would be easier to get around. The bag weighed 1.4 kg over the 23kg limit, but well under the 46kg the two passengers were allowed. But Air New Zealand staff wouldn’t allow the bag on, unless he paid an extra fee of $60. He refused, and Steve says the staff member waved his ticket in his face saying “did you not read the terms and conditions of your ticket?” The staff member was Errol Hardy, a supervisor for Air New Zealand in Nelson. Steve – who is also the publisher of Waimea Weekly – says the actions made him both embarrassed and humiliated, before unpacking the offending 1.4kg from their bag and taking it on board as carry-on luggage. “Both my wife who, although not travelling was helping us get aboard, and I were extremely embarrassed and humiliated. We couldn’t believe the lack of professionalism and the lack of empathy shown for what we believe was a genuine case for some staff discretion, with regard to the ridiculously tiny extra weight, when we were in fact still 20kgs short of our combined allowance. We found the whole atmosphere at the Air NZ counter to be unhelpful, grumpy and condescending to us and other passengers.”
Air New Zealand staff member Errol Hardy waved a customer’s ticket in his face saying “did you not read the terms and conditions of your ticket?” He says he wanted to tell his story because many can’t. “I have since understood, by a number of frequent fliers comments, that the gentleman I dealt with is a bit famous for this type of condescending behaviour and would benefit greatly by some extra staff training, or even just a damn good slap,” he wrote. “Funny thing is, Air NZ fly exactly the same kind of aluminium airplanes every other world airline does. However previously it was service and people that made it Air New Zealand.” Air New Zealand was given an opportunity to comment on the incident six days before deadline, but had not responded directly to it. lington return late last year for an important interview, only to have it cost them $797. She says she booked the flights eight days out. “I just felt they’re taking advantage of having the market to themselves,” she says. Air New Zealand is currently advertising one way flights to Rarotonga from Auckland for $310, and $236 to fly from Auckland to Brisbane. To fly from Auckland to Nelson can cost $399, but Air New Zealand says the cost of running smaller planes means they have to charge more. “An Auckland-Nelson journey involves travelling on the smaller aircraft. The operating costs for these aircraft are higher and the costs are shared by fewer passengers and this is reflected in ticket prices.” Other Air New Zealand horror stories from Nelsonians include a $460 charge to change one way flights to a different time on the same day. The original cost of the tickets was $189 each. And that of a boy who took his skateboard on a plane to Wellington but when he flew back to Nelson he was told he couldn’t bring it on the plane and was forced to leave it in Wellington with his older brother, who he was visiting. Steve says the whole thing smacks of no competition. “I think Air New Zealand are treating Nelsonians like they are a bit thick and meek, and we are not. Dog trialists aim for nationals Rodney Biggs isn’t actually barking mad when he says “dog trialling is in the blood”. While obviously not a factual statement, it describes his family to a ‘t’. Rodney and his uncle Ernie Pauling will both enter in this week’s Waimea sheep dog trials, as will Rodney’s father. His grandfather was also a dog trialist and it seems his influence, and the fact they’ve all worked on the farm, was the reason they got into dog trialling as children. “I was always keen on dogs, so I just started dog trialling when I was nine years old,” says Rodney, who has competed for the past 26 years. The Waimea sheep dog trials will be held on Wednesday and Thursday at Norm Johnson and Peter Brown’s properties on Higgins Rd. It should attract around 50 competitors in the heading, and 40 in the huntaway. Competitors will use next week’s event to obtain
crucial qualifying points for the national championship. To gain entry, each person needs six points from a qualifying events, and just five are given to the winner of each one. The runner up receives four, third place receives three, and so on. Rodney says “at the end of the day it’s always good to say you’ve qualified”, as it’s the goal for most sheep dog trialists, even if they don’t actually attend the nationals. “If you qualify your dog you know you’ve had a reasonably successful season,” adds Ernie, a 60 year veteran in dog trialling. Ernie says the key part of being a good sheep dog trialist is also being a good stockman, then secondly you need to have good dog handling skills. “It’s either in you or it’s not,” he says. Both Rodney and Ernie wanted to thank Norm and Peter for allowing use of their property, and Nigel and Colin Gibbs for supplying the sheep.

Farmers staff lose their locks for cancer fundraiser

Five staff from Farmers in the Richmond Mall didn’t need to go far to get their heads shaved as part of the store’s participation in Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand’s annual Shave for a Cure fundraiser. All they had to do was walk out the front entrance of their store and line up outside neighbouring retailer Cuts @ Once, where hairdresser Becks Fisher was waiting. It didn’t take long for Christine Knight, Trish Watson, Simon Barrett, Shelley McQuade and store manager Deon de Clercq to lose their locks, with Becks completing her five Shaves for a Cure in about 45 minutes. “It’s awesome, I’m really glad I did it,” Shelley says. “I was due for a haircut and it’s such a good cause. “I had a choice and wanted to do it. People with cancer don’t have a choice.” Christine was also happy to contribute to a “really good cause” although admits that it

WW1 heroes now found online
The Roll of Honour of soldiers from the Nelson-Tasman region who died in World War I has been posted on the Tasman Libraries website as part of a project to mark this year’s 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War. Library staff have spent the last year digitising the World War I section of Cyd Daughtrey and Eileen Thawley’s roll of honour series and finished posting it on the library’s Kete Tasman website last month. It contains information on the estimated 430 service men from the Nelson-Tasman region

who died in the war that started on July 29, 1914 and now the library is inviting people to add their own family photos, diaries and letters to the site. Information services librarian Cathy Vaughan says WWI had a big impact on families in the region and they wanted to put the Roll of Honour online to make it more accessible. It contains the names of the servicemen, the names of their parents, where they lived and where they served and died. It also provides a link to the Auckland War Memorial Cenotaph Record which includes additional information including the soldier’s occupation, the vessel they sailed on and SEASON their destination SEASON and where they

are buried. “About 2500 people from this area served in World War I in some capacity and nearly one in five didn’t return so it had a very big affect on the region. The aim of our project was to get all the information on these servicemen out there and then encourage families who had relatives in the war to add their own stories.” Cathy says librarians Karen Dickerson and Louise Gribbon did most of the work digitising the information. The Roll of Honour shows that one set of Tadmor brothers John and Steve Hannen died three years and thousands of kilometres apart with John dying of wounds in Gallipoli on August 6, 1915 and Steve also dying of wounds in France on August 17, 1918. However, the roll shows the greatest tragedy was endured by the Harvey family who lost three brothers, Charles, Percy and Frederick, in combat - a fourth

Cathy says people who want to add their own stories and photos to the Kete can book Richmond Library staff to help them digitise and upload the
material. The Richmond Library’s Imaginarium can be used free of charge for recording and scanning information and photos. The digitised version of the Roll of Honour can be found by searching on the Kete Tasman website at ketetasman.peoplesnetworknz. info

Cop and his family take on trafficking Nick and Bonnie Kempthrone are used to working to help others, but their latest journey even has them a little nervous. Nick is a Nelson police officer and Bonnie works for Family Education Network, and they both volunteer through their church, Richmond New Life. But in just two months the Bishopdale couple will pack up their home and their three young children to move to the Philippines to work as volunteers for Global Impact in an attempt to help stop human trafficking. Global Impact has been running for around ten years and just last year started a new programme called Born to Fly. It aims to raise public awareness of human trafficking and educating those most vulnerable. Nick says most of the victims are lured into trafficking because they’ve been deceived with promises of high paying jobs and mainly come from the poorer rural areas. Sixty per cent of those who fall into trafficking are for slave labour and forty per cent for the sex industry. Bonnie says when they heard the details about what the charity does, they were immediately keen to be
involved. “You hear tid bits about human trafficking and you think ‘man, that’s a massive injustice’ and you feel like you’re compelled to do something, but you don’t know what. So when the opportunity presented itself we were like ‘yeah, we want to join in and fight. We want to help’.” While the adjustments of moving from Nelson to a city of 1.2 million people will be huge, the Kempthorne’s say they are full of optimism about the trip, although there are a few nerves. “There are some dangers and we will stick out but we are focussed on the positives,” says Nick. “It would be really good to be able to look back at the end of the year and say ‘look at what we achieved, this is where we made a difference’.” Because they will both be volunteering for the year and Nick will be on unpaid leave, they need to raise $40,000 for their living costs and plane tickets. I know of several people, it is way dangerous. I have challenged sellers, they don’t care and hide behind the legal aspect and cream money in from addicted clientele. As well the pawn shops that know why the people are coming in to sell everything they own/or can steal so they can get high. Burgs have increased and anxiety and depression are side effects. As a health promoter, I was encouraged to see that a local teenager has written to the prime minister about the effects of legal psychoactive substances on his peers. There are several issues to consider regarding psychoactive substances. Banning a substance does not prevent use – just look at cannabis – but it does deter people from seeking health services when they need them. Psychoactive substances will remain available regardless of whether they are banned by law – there is always a black market, and alternative supplies online. The new Psychoactive Substances Act (2013) is an attempt to ensure that ‘approved products’ purchased by New Zealanders will have a low risk of harm. The regulations for this act are currently being written, and will include guidelines around determining the risk of harm. In the meantime, some substances are legally available which users

They’d sound like a child’s piano out here but this Beale is perfect.” Steph was delighted with the opening saying “the street piano is for everyone to use, enjoy and respect. It will create a special ambience unique to the Richmond shopping area.” Steph says she had dreamed of finding a street piano for Richmond for 10 years and was thrilled her dream had become a reality. The piano has been painted with themes from around the Tasman district by her friends from the Tasman Visual Arts Group so it can also provide people with a visual symphony, she says. The piano will be stored in Cash and Trade in Sundial Square and wheeled out on a special platform made by Brightwater Engineering for anyone to play. It is a nonprofit project although Steph gently reminded people attending the opening that it had a small donation box attached to help pay for maintenance and tuning.

After performing a perfect rendition of Memories, Doug smiled and gave Richmond’s street piano his approval. “It’s ideal for a street piano,” Doug says. “It’s nicely modulated and sounds wonderful.

However, there are some juicy parts that you should look for before you sign. Find out if there are any charges for paying it off sooner than agreed. What are the extra charges going to be if you get behind in payments? What will happen if you still owe money at the end of the term? What rights are you giving the company? Eg. Are you giving them Power of Attorney? Is anything being used as security against the loan or agreement? Security against your ‘household possessions both current and future acquired’ means that if you stop paying the company, they can take anything you own now and anything you acquire in the future and sell it to recover monies owed to them. Can the company change the terms and conditions of your contract whenever they want to? Remember, the company must provide you with a copy of the contract and you have a 3-day cooling off period in which you can cancel the contract in writing. Brightwater Playcentre has had a fairly busy term so far. We held our Open Day on Monday 3 March, which was pretty successful with a couple of new families coming to check out our Centre. Last Wednesday we had a fantastic trip to Natureland Zoo and, despite it raining very hard in Richmond, there was no rain in Tahunanui. Seniorcare Brightwater It is always a pleasure catching up with friends from the community at the start of a new year and getting the Waimea Senior Care programme under way after a long break. Our programme for 2014 began in February with a presentation from Cherie Thomas of Nelson Bays Primary Health talking about fall prevention. Cherie’s tips included the importance of supportive, well – gripping footwear, clean glasses and, if you need to use a walking stick, it should be measured to fit your needs. She was also adamant about remaining active and said that maintaining seemingly small daily routines, such as a walk to the letterbox, is important. With this in mind, you may like to join Nicola for her exercise and games programme

Let’s make every hour Earth Hour Are you ready for another candlelight dinner this Saturday night? Millions of people around the world, including many in the Tasman Nelson region, will enjoy an hour of darkness in support of the annual symbolic event of Earth Hour. This event encourages households and businesses to turn off all non-
essential lights for one hour in support of the need to keep taking steps to care for this planet. The Earth Hour event, organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), gets bigger each year. A huge range of exciting and inspiring activities have been organised for the annual event since it
began in 2007. This year we are encouraged again to use our “power” to make or keep the commitment to, taking care of ourselves, others and the environment beyond the hour. More and more people in Tasman and Nelson appreciate that anything and everything in their day to day living can be an opportunity to reduce their ecological footprint. Having lived, trained and raced in Germany in a bid to further his athletics career, Andrew Kennedy probably never expected a return to Nelson would see him finally reach his potential. The 24 year old personal trainer finished fifth in the senior men’s 100m at last year’s New Zealand Track and Field Championship, and he heads to the same event this weekend having ran the fastest race of his life just last month – a wind assisted 10.68 seconds. While unable to claim the time as a personal best, due to the illegal wind, it has still given him a huge boost ahead of the national championship in Wellington, and he backed that up by running 10.82 seconds just a fortnight ago. “Looking at the times I’ve been running, wind assisted or not, and the times the other guys have been running, looking at a medal is not out of the question. You’d never say never anyway, but running that

Andrew is currently part of the ten-man high performance 4x100m squad, although qualifying for the event in Glasgow this year is becoming less likely, with the qualification time unable to be met in all three attempts so far. While he hasn’t been part of the A squad that has competed in Australia with the hope of qualifying, Andrew knows a top six, or top four finish at nationals will increase his chances of being involved in future squads. Andrew, who will head to Wellington as part of a 25-strong Tasman team, will also be competing in the 200m sprint.

It’s often hard to read too much into the first rugby game of the season, but it appears that Waimea Old Boys and Wanderers could be the teams to beat again this year. Both of last year’s finalists opened their account with wins on Saturday, edging other fancied sides. Star & Garter Waimea, who last year won the title, beat Tasman Trophy holders Galbraith Group Nelson 34-26 at Neale Park. While Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers held on with 14 men to beat the returning Wakatu Marist 23-18 at the Brightwater Domain. The success Waimea had last year might be its downfall this year, with star trio James Lowe, Marty Banks and Billy Guyton all selected into Super Rugby squads, which means their availibility will be minimal at best. But some strong recruitment, including a handful of Waimea College first XV players, most notably their captain Tim Coman, and a former Waratahs B flanker Pete Samu should complement the winning core from last year. Wanderers, who are three years into their three year plan since coming back into the top tier of club rugby, have added Fletcher Matthews from Waimea College, and have the bulk of their young squad that finished in second place last year. They showed plenty of aggression on Saturday, but at times that went overboard with flanker Loa Windley red-carded for a horror tackle. Both teams will target wins again this weekend with Waimea facing Kahurangi in Riwaka and Wanderers hosting Stoke at Brightwater.
